A Message From Deb Dupnik, NCH Executive Director
Hi everyone and welcome to the August issue of The Homeopathic Report!
My message for this month’s newsletter is about giving. I’m not talking about monetary donations; I’m talking about giving of one’s selfyour time and talents. Being a volunteer means that you are offering something – something that is not required nor an obligation. Most of the time, volunteering means that you are working side by side with others. This connects you to other human beings as you are working toward a common goal. When you volunteer, you are making connections. Are you looking for a way to give back to the community or make a difference to others by sharing your love of homeopathy?
NCH is looking for individuals who are interested in volunteering one to two hours per month to serve on one of the following committees:
  • Conference Committee
  • Communications Committee
  • Education Committee
  • Fundraising Committee
  • Membership Committee
  • Publications Committee
  • Public Policy Committee
  • Website Committee

What was your first encounter with homeopathy?
My grandfather was, in my culture, called an Indian doctor, which was the terminology used for anyone during his generation that made medicine from natural substances. He would bring back Sassafras leaves and tree bark and dead bees and other cuttings that I never knew the names. My mother was very allergic to bees, and he would make a poultice for her. To make the poultice he would give me the glass jar of liquid substance and tell me to dance! He was famous for a Sassafras tea that people would seek him for that was a known panacea for everything that conventional medicine could not heal. So, I was introduced to the concept and preference for all things natural and the respect for what nature could provide for healing. Was he doing homeopathy? I am not certain, but know that succussion is part of our medicine process and as I was stung by a swarm of bees last summer, I know how effective Apis is!

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)
The study followed 20 women, aged 20-48, suffering from PMS. Homeopathic intervention was chosen individually for each patient, according to a model of symptom clusters. Volunteers were treated randomly with one oral dose of a homeopathic medication or placebo. The main outcome measure was scores of a daily menstrual distress questionnaire (MDQ) before and after treatment. Psychological tests for suggestibility were used to examine the possible effects of suggestion.
Mean MDQ scores fell from 0.44 to 0.13 (P<0.05) with active treatment, and from 0.38 to 0.34 with placebo (NS). (Between group P=0.057). Improvement >30% was observed in 90% of patients receiving active treatment and 37.5% receiving placebo (P=0.048). Homeopathic treatment was found to be effective in alleviating the symptoms of PMS in comparison to placebo.
Yakir, Kreitler, et al., The British Homeopathic Journal. 90(3):148-53, 2001
This study based on observations of patients suffering from headache (migraine with and without aura and tension-type headache) showed that the mean and median scores of all life quality dimensions rose post-homeopathic treatment.
More than 60% of the cases experienced an improvement in pain and the limitations caused by pain, as well as in limitations in social activities and health in general. All the differences between pre/post post treatment were statistically highly significant, with the strongest results in the 'bodily pain' and 'vitality' parameters (P < 0.0001).
