Homeopathy & Black History Month
Rebecca Davis Lee Crumpler (February 8, 1831 – March 9, 1895) was the first African-American woman doctor graduating from New England Female Medical College in Boston in 1864. That year, there were 54,543 physicians in the United States, 300 of whom were women, none of whom were African-American.
The New England Female Medical College merged with Boston University Medical School adopting a homeopathic medical approach with a staff of 26 homeopaths. Her book, A Book of Medical Discourses, published in 1883, is thought to be heavily influenced by homeopathy although she does not name homeopathy in her writing.

How did you discover homeopathy?
I heard about homeopathy in 2000 through a friend of mine whose sister was studying at a homeopathy school in New York. They had an inexpensive clinic and I had been suffering from chronic bronchitis for three months. I’d even cracked two ribs from intense, spasmodic coughing fits. I’d also been a number of times to my regular physician, who had prescribed various antibiotics and medications to no effect. Ready to try anything, I went to the homeopathy clinic, where I was interviewed at length about my condition and health history. They suggested one remedy and within a week, my lungs cleared. I was not necessarily looking for ‘alternative care.’ I had just not had success with allopathic medicine for this ailment.

Healing of Surgical Wounds
Effect of the homeopathic remedies Arnica montana and Staphysagria on the time of healing of surgical wounds.
This study illustrates the effectiveness of the homeopathic remedies, Arnica and Staphysagria, in 7C and 30C, on the speed of the healing surgical incisions on animals.
The four groups that received homeopathic treatment presented a significant reduction in the number of days required for the full healing of the surgical wound (15-16 days) than the control group (20-23 days).

Ignatia Amara in Menopause
With the example of treatment of menopause-related vegetative and emotional disturbances, the author verifies the effectiveness of the use of Ignatia amara as an alternative to placebo. Substantial improvement in psychological and psychosomatic symptoms was observed. Climacteric complaints diminished or disappeared completely in the majority of women (95.7%) by patient evaluation and 96.2% by physician evaluation. The results obtained in this work indicate the significant therapeutic potential of this group of treatments, which is in line with the therapeutic effect of the placebo.
