The Homeopathic Community’s Response to the FDA/FTC

On December 8, 2016, NCH hosted a meeting of representatives from more than 10 homeopathic organizations and manufacturers to discuss the recent statements and recommendations made by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The homeopathic community is deeply concerned about the actions of both of these agencies and has formed a task force to identify the most strategic and appropriate collective course of action. We will share more information about how individuals in the homeopathic community can support this effort if and when it is determined that a broader community response is appropriate.  You can find a list of official press releases related to this issue on the NCH website.

Homeopathy for Croup
Advice from Dr. Tim Dooley, ND MD

Have you ever tried to breathe through a straw? The smaller the straw, the harder it is to do, and the harder you try to breathe, the less effective your efforts become. This is very similar to what croup feels like, a respiratory disease that is common in the fall and early winter.

The vast majority of croup attacks can be helped by a few simple measures. First, holding the child in a comforting way helps them feel secure and relax. Turn on the shower so that the bathroom gets steamy and then hold the child in that humid air. For the same reason, keeping a humidifier in the child's room during respiratory ailments can help attacks. Carrying the child in the cool night air often brings relief.

But what else? Once again, homeopathy to the rescue!

The three most common homeopathic remedies for patients with croup are:

  • Aconite – The main properties are sudden onset of symptoms, a feeling of anxious panic or fear of death, and great restlessness. Add to these characteristics the fact that Aconite can cure a hoarse, dry, barking cough, and you have a perfect picture of a patient with croup. In fact, Aconite so closely fits the picture of a classic croup attack that it is almost always the first remedy given during an acute attack.
  • Spongia – Is usually prescribed on its peculiar specific symptoms. The cough is hollow, barking, or croupy and is often worse if the patient takes cold drinks and better if the patient takes warm drinks or food. It is this combination of a barking dry cough that is worse from cold drinks and/or better from warm drinks that is peculiar and characteristic for Spongia. In addition, the respiratory passages are dry and the patient may wake with a fear of suffocation.
  • Hepar sulph – It is both the general and peculiar characteristics for Hepar sulph that lead to its use in patients with croup, usually in the later stages of the illness. Patients who need this remedy are usually chilly; they just can't tolerate drafts or cold air. Emotionally they tend to be touchy and irritable. They often sweat easily. Their mucus discharges and expectoration tend to be thick and yellow. Their cough is choking, often barking, with rattling in the chest and is often brought on by breathing cold air.

A patient with croup may need all three of these remedies over a period of days as the illness goes through various stages.  The vast majority of the time, croup is a self-limiting and benign disease. My experience is that patients with this illness usually respond well to the simple measures and remedies outlined in this column. But anytime a patient, especially a child, is having respiratory problems, caution must be exercised. It is difficult to give exact parameters for which patients should go to the emergency room, but suffice to say that any patient having trouble breathing or becoming excessively fatigued from their illness needs a medical evaluation. Meet the NCH Board of Directors
Each month we highlight a Board Member to help you get better acquainted with the faces of NCH.

Lauren Hubele, M.Ed., was introduced to homeopathy when she was four months pregnant and received a diagnosis of melanoma cancer in 2001. Having lost her mother early in life to melanoma, Lauren chose to write a different story for herself and her growing family. Given the option of care with a homeopath MD in Heidelberg, she began down a path she still continues on today. Passionate about the healing power of the body and the importance of supporting the body’s ability to eliminate, Lauren eventually built her Austin, Texas, practice around what she learned through her personal experiences and the training she received from a variety of European mentors.

It was Lauren’s desire to support the greater mission of homeopathy the led her to seek a position on the NCH board. She is determined to be a part of the push to move homeopathy to its well-deserved place in health care today and believes this will best be achieved by communicating as a unified force.

Lauren is the mother of three children, Meghan 31, Kate 29, and Sebastian 14, who all reside in Austin and are big fans of homeopathy and embrace plant-based eating. She met her husband Joachim in Germany and the family moved to America together in 2008, returning for visits one to two months out of each year.

Prior to stepping into the world of homeopathy, Lauren was an accomplished educator for over 20 years. She taught high school in Heidelberg, Germany, for 10 years and before that served in a variety of administrative positions in the public and private sector. During that time she gained considerable experience working with boards and enjoys sharing the skills she acquired with the NCH board today.

THE ORGANON by Samuel Hahnemann – An Outline
Provided in tribute to Julian Winston, May 1941 – June 2005, beloved Editor-In-Chief of Homeopathy Today for 21 years.

It is often said that studying The Organon is fundamental for any successful homeopath. In this series we glean some Winston Wisdom by revisiting Julian’s outline of this masterpiece.

204-209: Introduction to the treatment of chronic disease

  1. If we exclude all chronic diseases that are caused by unhealthy living (Para. 77) and all medicinal diseases (Para. 74), most of the remainder of chronic diseases, WITHOUT EXCEPTION, are caused by the three miasms, sycosis, syphilis, and a greater proportion, psora.

  2. The homoeopath will never treat the primary symptoms, but only cures the underlying miasm. Refer to Chronic Diseases.

  3. When taking the chronic case, make a careful investigation if the patient ever had venereal disease. Two miasms might be present, but, frequently, psora is the sole fundamental cause of all chronic disease.

  4. Find out what kind of allopathic treatment had been had, to understand how the disease has changed.

  5. The patient’s age, mode of living and diet, occupation, domestic position, social relation, etc. must be taken into consideration, as well as the state of the mind and the disposition.

  6. Trace the picture of the disease, and get the patient to tell the most striking and peculiar symptoms.

Note: The above is only an outline. To comprehend The Organon in its fullness, we recommend that you read the book.
The Organon is usually studied by the intermediate to advanced student of homeopathy.

MYMOP2 Study

The results of a recent Measure Yourself Medical Outcome Profile (MYMOP2) study conducted at the the Bristol Homeopathic Hospital in south-west England adds to a growing body of observational data which demonstrates that when patients with long term conditions come under homeopathic care their presenting symptoms and wellbeing often improve.  Read more.

Investigating the Use of Homeopathic Medicines in Agriculture

Professor Giovanni Dinelli of University of Bologna explains why he switched careers from developing herbicides to working with “agrohomeopathy,” plus the challenges faced by scientists wanting to conduct rigorous research into homeopathy. Watch the video here.

Science Behind Homeopathy Documentary

A documentary video, Science Behind Homeopathy, is another attempt to scientifically answer many queries like high dilution, dynamization, mode of action, transfer of biological information, physicochemical properties, etc. related to high dilutions and homeopathy. According to Initiative to Promote Research in Homeopathy (IPRH), this video is the most updated work purely based on the peer-reviewed scientific publications in high dilution and homeopathy dedicated to fundamental research. View the 23-minute video here. – An Ultra High Dilution Portal is an online portal that works as a repository and reference space for research studies that have been conducted on dilution aspect of homeopathy (=ultra high dilutions), where medicines were diluted beyond 24X or 12CH dilution. It is not only a website to support homeopathy, but it symbolizes the enthusiasm and dynamism beyond materialistic medicine!  Visit to learn more or sign up for their email list.

Inner Development and the 21st Century Homeopath: The Revelation of Inspiring Homeopathy
January 17, 2017, 8:00pm – 9:00pm ET

Moving beyond traditional materia medica, next generation homeopaths will increasingly be required to invest in personal healing and transformation. Tinus Smits’ system of Inspiring Homeopathy offers an inclusive approach for growth and development of the practitioner and the client. In order to recognize the influence of the homeopath on the client interaction and the remedy action, homeopaths must take the journey into the nature of substance. Preparing clients for the action of the remedy is key for lasting dynamic results. This webinar will explore the Healing Archetypes of Inspiring Homeopathy and Smits’ use of nine remedies to enhance the skills and inner development of the homeopath.

About the presenter: Dr. Joel Kreisberg, Founder and Director of the Teleosis Institute (, formerly the Teleosis School of Homeopathy), has been teaching homeopathy for 28 years. He is the author of The Homeopathic Handbook for the Treatment of Poison Ivy/Oak and Coaching and Healing: Transforming the Illness Narrative. He is the principle practitioner at Integrative Homeopathic Medicine. He practices in Berkeley, CA.

This webinar is FREE, but available only to current NCH members. Don’t have a current membership? Join online today at

Since retiring, your father has been able to get back into his favorite pastime, golf. Even though he’s been enjoying his newfound freedom on the greens, the pain of golfer’s elbow is now putting a damper on his fun. After tossing and turning at night, he can get some rest and relief only after a gentle massage and the heating pad. He already tried Arnica and Rhus tox, which helped some, but they haven’t in his words “done the trick.” What remedy that has an affinity for tendons do you suggest he try next?

Stories of Inspiration

One day I was going to my hairdresser's home for a trim. Her voice sounded odd and I was concerned. She said her tongue was “so sore” and that she had been to the doctor and was put on medication for it, but even so, she had been miserable for over a week. When I asked about her symptoms she described the pain as “burning.” I retrieved my homeopathic kit from the car and immediately gave her a dose of Causticum. Then, while adding some additional pellets to a bottle of water, just in case she needed another dose after I had gone, I was explaining how to take it when she yelled, "It's gone! The pain is gone!" I shook my head in disbelief because I have never myself had relief so quickly after taking a remedy or seen it in others either. She just couldn't believe it herself as she had only heard me talk about homeopathy, but she had never taken a homeopathic remedy in her life. It feels so good to help someone in need, but also to prove once again these wonderful little pellets can perform magic!
