Homeopathy for Heartburn

For some, heartburn is experienced only occasionally, but others suffer from it all too often. If you suffer from heartburn or acid reflux regularly, then it’s probably time to focus on prevention by keeping a food log, identifying your heartburn triggers, and reducing the appearance of these triggers in your diet, if not avoiding them all together. Luckily, homeopathy offers a selection of remedies for the treatment of heartburn and acute acid reflux symptoms:

  • Nux vomica: One of the primary remedies for digestive complaints is Nux vomica. The individual may complain of stomach pains of all types including burning, bloating, aching, constipation, nausea, belching, and the feeling of stomach digest and acid backing up into the throat. One characteristic of the sufferer which helps determine this remedy, is a brusque temperament—similar to that of the overworked, high-powered businessman/woman who is very intense. The sufferer may be bossy and easy to anger and often eats and drinks alcohol in excess. This individual desires coffee, spicy food, fatty foods, and other stimulants. The person in need of Nux vomica is inclined to overdo everything—and all these overabundances contribute to heart burn and acid reflux
  • Carbo vegetabilis: The individual needing Carbo vegetabilis has heartburn characterized by belching, bloating, heaviness in the stomach and chest and distress from eating simple, plain foods. Bitter, sour, rancid burping, along with nausea and a very bloated abdomen are typical; burping gives temporary relief. Individuals in need of Carbo vegetabilis feel worse after rich, high-fat food and crave fresh air. Feeling physically exhausted and mentally sluggish are also common, but lying down makes the indigestion worse. Hands and feet will likely be cold.

  • Arsenicum album: The individual in need of Arsenicum album may complain of burning pains felt in the stomach and food backing up into the esophagus, accompanied by burning pains all the way up to the throat. There may be severe, watery, burning, yellow diarrhea. Many of the symptoms will subside while drinking hot drinks like tea or by applying heat, such as through use of a heating pad. Sufferers needed Arsenicum album will be thirsty for frequent sips of cold water and their mental state may be anxious, restless, and fearful of being left alone.

  • Phosphorus: The individual needing Phosphorus for heartburn will complain about burning pains felt in the abdomen, bloating, and a feeling of fullness accompanied by great thirst for icy cold drinks—which are vomited back up shortly after becoming warm in the stomach. Belching and vomiting of undigested food are also characteristic of the person needing Phosphorus. The person is mild-mannered and seeks company and affection.

  • Pulsatilla: The person in need of Pulsatilla complains that their stomach feels empty or that there is a sensation of a hole being burned in their stomach. There is often gurgling and rumbling, as well as flatulence. The heartburn comes on at different times of the day and after eating various kinds of foods (especially rich, greasy ones). Fresh air helps. The sufferer's temperament is sweet, gentle, whiny and tearful. He or she is afraid of being alone and desires sympathy. Individuals may have cravings for ice cream, fatty foods, and pastries, which make them feel worse and aggravate the reflux.

External Use Remedy Tips
In this series we highlight the external uses of some common homeopathic remedies.

Urtica urens
(Common Name: Stinging nettle)

You can make a liquid lotion by adding the mother tincture to water or purchase one of the ointments or creams on the market. Here are a few ways that you can make use of it:

  • Minor burn: Apply a compress soaked in lotion, ointment, or cream for minor burns with redness but no blistering. Follow up with the internal remedy that best matches your symptoms.
  • Sunburn: Carefully apply cream or lotion to sunburned skin and repeat as needed. A mixture of Urtica and Hypericum is indicated when shooting pains are present. Follow up with the internal remedy that best matches your symptoms.
  • Bee sting: Gently pat tincture on the sting and follow up with an internal remedy
  • Skin rashes: Use Urtica lotion or cream to relieve the itching of eczema and other skin irritations that itch, sting and then burn. Seek the help of a professional homeopath for the correct internal remedy.

THE ORGANON by Samuel Hahnemann –  An Outline
Provided in tribute to Julian Winston, May 1941 – June 2005, beloved Editor-In-Chief of Homeopathy Today for 21 years.

It is often said that studying The Organon is fundamental for any successful homeopath. In this series we glean some Winston Wisdom by revisiting Julian’s outline of this masterpiece.

121-132: Conducting Provings:

  1. 121. Strong substances produce effects in small doses, weak substances produce effects in larger doses, and the mildest must be tested on very sensitive people
  2. The medicines used in provings must be pure and well known
  3. They must be taken in a pure form
  4. They should not be mixed with other substances
  5. The diet of the provers should be strictly regulated and simple. No stimulating drinks. [footnote giving specific restrictions]
  6. The prover must be trustworthy and devote himself to observation. He must be in good health and intelligent enough to be able to describe sensations accurately
  7. The provings should be done by both sexes
  8. Provers should take 4–6 globules of the 30th daily  for several days
  9. If effects are slight, then take a few more globules. Start with a small dose and increase daily
  10. If the first dose produces symptoms, then the experimenter can learn the order of succession of the symptoms-- which is useful to learn the primary and alternating actions. The duration of action can be found only after a comparison of several experiments
  11. If you have to give the medicine for several days, you can't learn about the order of symptoms. One dose might act curatively of symptoms caused by the previous dose. Record these symptoms in brackets until further experiments show if they are secondary action or alternating action.
  12. But if you are just interested in symptoms and not in the order, give it every day.

Note: The above is only an outline. To comprehend The Organon in its fullness, we recommend that you read the book.
The Organon is usually studied by the intermediate to advanced student of homeopathy.

New book! One Heart, One Mind: The Case for Healing Autism and PANDAS

A diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can be startling news for any parent. Professional homeopath Pierre Fontaine, CCH provides hope for a permanent and natural solution.

Disputing that most ASD is not reversible, Fontaine empowers parents with the knowledge needed to seek alternative care. Through explanations of both ASD and homeopathy, he presents cases from his own practice that demonstrate how autism can be reversed when paired together.

Fontaine outlines how he looks into both the child's history and the parents' experience of their child in order to go beyond simply treating the symptoms of the disorder. He ultimately seeks to find what is at the core of the child's suffering and how parents can help.

One Heart, One Mind gives families, as well as health professionals, a fresh look at how practical solutions to autism can be discovered in a book that offers exactly what parents are seeking: Hope.

The California Homeopath’s Scientific Research on Homeopathy Issue

The California Homeopath, the journal of the California Homeopathic Medical Society, has published an issue dedicated to research—Scientific Research on Homeopathy. Highlights include:

  • Introduction to Homeopathy as Adaptive Network Nanomedicine – What is a homeopathic remedy? What is a homeopathic potency? How does a remedy act? Those questions have fascinated proponents of homeopathy and mobilized the doubts of skeptics for more than two centuries. In recent years, various researchers have finally begun to discover important scientific clues to answer these questions. Do we have the final answers? Not yet, but we do have valuable new insights and advances. Continue reading.
  • Validity of High Potency Homeopathic Remedies – This paper offers a magnified glimpse into the morphology of homeopathic remedy preparations on the micrometer scale (17.2 um or 17, 200 nm). Dr. Shirl indicates that the remedies in potency have unique, remedy-specific morphology at this level. Dr. Shirl’s images of the remedies are taken at a magnification level orders of magnitude larger than the typical size of nanoparticles found of source material in the remedies. Continue reading.
  • Nanoparticle Characterization of Traditional Homeopathically-Manufactured Gelsemium sempervirens – In this 2015 paper, we learn that not only do silicate structures from the glassware form during mechanical succusion of homeopathic remedies, but if a traditional cork stopper is used, then the resultant biological nanostructure that forms (possibly in conjunction with plant-based remedy nanostructures) may also be stabilizing to the verum nanostructures, resulting in high surface charge as a characteristic. Continue reading.
  • A Review of Basic Research on Homeopathy from a Physicist's Point of View – That the potency of a homoeopathic medicine increases with dilution followed by succussion (together termed as potentization) has thrown challenges to the scientific community at large. A recent hypothesis is that due to the process of potentization, the size of the constituent particles decreases and eventually reaches nanodimension. Continue reading.
Layers of an Onion: Principles for Treating Complex Mental Health Problems
June 13, 2016, 8:00pm – 9:00pm ET

Join us and Judith Acosta to learn the importance of stepping away from the psychiatric diagnosis—no matter how en vogue it may be—and into the critical world of seeing the patient, especially when mental/emotional symptoms dominate the case and there are few physical symptoms present. Judith will then go over a few unusual cases which took unexpected turns.

About the presenter: Judith Acosta, LISW, CCH, is a licensed psychotherapist, crisis counselor, as well as a classical homeopath. She is the co-author of The Worst is Over (Jodere, 2002), hailed as the "Bible of Crisis Communications" and Verbal First Aid for Children (Penguin, 2010). She has written countless articles on Verbal First Aid, culture and the media, trauma, and homeopathy. She has trained paramedics, fire fighters, police officers and medical professionals in “verbal first aid” around the United States. She has also given seminars on animal-assisted therapy, trauma and burnout, stress reduction, and communication for risk management to corporations and private groups. In private practice, she specializes in classical homeopathy and the treatment of trauma, anxiety, and depression. She brings more than 25 years of successful experience to her clients.

Oh, no! You come down with a cold. You are congested and miserable with enlarged lymph nodes. But there's no time to be sick because you have clients to see and a homeopathic study group to lead this evening. You retreat to your office since the warmness of the room offers some comfort. Sadly you must cancel your plans because the pain in your forehead is now extending to your eyeballs and every time you cough mucus flies of your mouth and nostrils. What remedy do you take?

(The answer is at the bottom of the newsletter.)

If you have a “Case Quiz” to share, send it to us at We love to feature cases submitted by our community members!

Stories of Inspiration

When my daughter was about four-years old cold sores (herpes simplex virus) developed on her tongue.  They were very itchy and she bit down on them, which then caused pain.  She cried, was miserable and there seemed to be no way to comfort or help her. Neither her dentist nor allopathic doctor offered any treatment or relief.  A friend of mine recommended that we see her holistic doctor, whose practice included a very good homeopath. The homeopath gave her Mercurius solubilis (Merc. sol.), which worked like a miracle!  I then began to learn more about homeopathy, joined a local study group, bought a remedy kit and eventually saw a practitioner myself for constitutional treatment. Our home remedy kit has been a godsend many times for fevers and other problems, especially the ones that came on at night! I even used Dr. Bach's flower remedies to help our dog during labor and afterwards.  I’m really grateful for the help that homeopathy has been over the years.
