A Message from the Australian Homeopathic Association (AHA)

As you may know, the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council’s (NHMRC) released a report entitled 'Homeopathy Review' on March 11, 2015. The NHMRC’s finding is damaging to the profession and is having repercussions both in Australia and internationally. Since then, AHA, in collaboration with Complementary Medicines Australia (CMA), has been engaged in an active, formal process of making NHMRC accountable for its flawed 'Review', and is pleased to share their progress with the greater homeopathic community. Free CE Credit for Nurses

Attention nurses! This is a reminder that you can earn FREE CE credits by reading Homeopathy Today magazine. The Winter 2015 issue features the third in a series of articles by family nurse practitioner Lia Bello, RN, FNP, CCH, offering continuing education contact hours for nurses. This is a great way for nurses to earn CE credits, and learn homeopathy at the same time! And, did we mention that the credits are free, if the required post-test and evaluation are completed within one year? The Winter 2015 article, “Catching Illness Early—and Chasing It Away: At first sign of colds or flu, remember 3 remedies”, provides 1 contact hour.

A special thanks to the Mirus Foundation and Lia Bello for working to provide this excellent opportunity to nurses.

Homeopathy for Headaches

Below is a short list of some of the most common remedies that can be helpful for headaches. In order to select a useful homeopathic remedy, the three most important things to identify about a headache are:

  1. The modalities of the pain (i.e., When does it happen? What makes it feel better or worse?)
  2. The location of the pain (e.g., Is it in the forehead, the base of the skull, does it move from one side to another?)
  3. The sensation (e.g., Does it feel like your head is splitting? Or that a nail is being driven in? or that you are being pressed in a vise?).

Be sure to pay particular attention to the strongest, most definite, and most peculiar symptoms of the headache:

Belladonna: intense headache with violent throbbing pains; extreme sensitivity to light, noise, touch, strong or unusual smell or jarring; pains begin and end suddenly; pain may be localized anywhere in head or spread throughout head, but is most often focused in forehead; pain may extend from forehead to back of head; face flushed and hot, hands and feet may be cold; pupils may be dilated; often used for headaches associated with high fever.

Bryonia: pain is described as a steady ache, marked sensitivity to motion (even slight motion of head or eyes); pain often in forehead and extending to back of head, or centered over left eye; pain worse by light touch but better from firm pressure; head feels full or heavy; worse in morning; nausea, vomiting and constipation may accompany headache; emotionally irritable and wants to be left alone.

Gelsemium: pain begins at back of head and extends to rest of head or forehead; may feel like a band or hood is bound tightly around head; headache preceded by dim vision or other visual disturbances; pain may be localized on right side of head; pain aggravated by light, noise, motion and jarring but not affected much by temperature change; better from napping or urinating; person feels dull, tired, heavy and apathetic; eyelids droop and person looks exhausted; not very irritable, but wants to be left alone.

Iris versicolor: pain felt on one side of forehead, especially the right side; pain preceded or accompanied by dim vision or other eyesight changes; nausea and vomiting, with headache worse after vomiting; pain better by walking in open air; periodically recurring migraines (e.g., every weekend).

Nux vomica: headaches brought on by overeating, use of alcohol, coffee or other drugs, or missed sleep; overall sick feeling and digestive upset; sour or bitter taste in mouth, queasiness, nausea and/or vomiting, "dry heaves" and/or gas; also for headache from mental over-exertion, cold air or cold wind; worse in morning, especially on first waking; worse motion, but shaking the head is especially painful; sound of footsteps is especially #irritating; pain better from wrapping up head or being in a warm room, or from a nap if allowed to finish it; very irritable.

Sanguinaria: especially noted for pain beginning in back of head and extending to and settling over right eye or in right side of head; pain is sharp, splitting, knife-like and sometimes throbbing; nausea and vomiting at height of pain, pain better after vomiting; worse motion, better sleep and firm pressure; headaches may recur in consistent pattern.

Spigelia: stitching, burning and pulsating pain, usually frontal and often left side; better from lying with head propped up; worse from stooping, motion, noise and cold stormy weather; washing with cold water may feel good, but pain usually worse after; head pain made worse from warmth and temporarily better from cold; headache with stiff neck and shoulders which make motion very painful; may have severe pain in and around eyes, extending deep into sockets.

Note: Belladonna, Nux vomica and Bryonia are the remedies most likely to be helpful for people suffering from an acute headache with few other symptoms. Seek medical care if the headache accompanied by stiff neck or high fever, is very severe (especially if it is unusual for you), headache occurs after a head injury.

THE ORGANON by Samuel Hahnemann –  An Outline
Provided in tribute to Julian Winston, May 1941 – June 2005, beloved Editor-In-Chief of Homeopathy Today for 21 years.

It is often said that studying The Organon is fundamental for any successful homeopath. In this series we glean some Winston Wisdom by revisiting Julian’s outline of this masterpiece.

91-99: CASETAKING (how to elicit the information) - Part 2

  1. In chronic cases, understand what the symptoms are before the medicines were taken. Ask to discontinue to see the real disease.
  2. In diseases of rapid course (acute) forget the other medicines. Do what you can to sort it out.
  3. See what the friends say about the patient.
  4. In cases of Chronic Disease, ask about habits, diet, and domestic situation to be able to remove the maintaining causes.
  5. In cases of Chronic Disease, the most minute peculiarities are attended to.
  6. Some patients might exaggerate their symptoms.
  7. Others have false modesty and allege that their symptoms are of no consequence.
  8. Attach credence to the patient's own expressions.
  9. Acute diseases are of short duration and easy to treat. There is less to inquire into and are often spontaneously detailed.

Note: The above is only an outline. To comprehend The Organon in its fullness, we recommend that you read the book.
The Organon is usually studied by the intermediate to advanced student of homeopathy.

Test your Beginner's First-aid for Animals knowledge!

The family cat finds the 4-pound roast you're defrosting in the sink. His rough tongue makes it through the freezer bag and butcher paper, and he's worked through most of the roast by the time you find him. The symptoms are indigestion, lethargy, a bit of vomiting, swollen abdomen, and messy stools. The remedy he needs is _______.

(The answer is at the bottom of the newsletter.)

A special thanks to Kristy Lampe for providing the First-aid for Animals to Homeopathy Today magazine in 2001.

It is the beginning of winter. Your toddler is running around with bare feet, like he was in warmer days, heedless of the cold floors. In a couple of days he starts coughing occasionally. He pushes food away on the table or wants very little. At times he makes a face as if feeling queasy after eating .You also notice on going potty that his stool is green. His cough is getting more severe as days go by and he seems to be making efforts to throw up, yet he can’t. At last, when he does throw up, it is watery and foamy. What remedy do you give him?

Stories of Inspiration

My daughter had frequent ear infections starting at five months old. Six years later after many rounds of antibiotics and two sets of tubes she had lost almost all of her hearing in the left ear and 40% of the hearing in the right ear.  The Doctors suggested another set of tubes. I took her to a homeopath who suggested a remedy well known for middle ear infections and at her next annual visit her hearing was normal in both ears.  She is now eleven years old and has not had any trouble since.
