NCH Honors Homeopathic History

On November 8, 2015, NCH dedicated a Pennsylvania State Historical Marker honoring the life and work of Dr. Constanine Hering at the location of his home and office in Philadelphia. This ceremony marked the end of a year-long effort to erect the marker, which began with a suggestion during an NCH Board of Directors meeting. An enthusiastic and robust crowd gathered for the dedication, including Dr. Hering’s great grandson, Conrad Hering Knerr, and most of Conrad’s six daughters. Attendees heard testimonials about Dr. Hering’s character, leadership and work, the deep well of homeopathic pharmaceutical and medical history in Philadelphia, and the city’s leadership in medical education and about the collections of historical homeopathic artifacts, including Dr. Hering’s books and writing, which abound in the region. The Holidays – Endless Cleaning, Cooking, & Entertaining

The holiday season can have an exhausting effect on those of us who are engaged in the endless round of house work, errands and social obligations. Most people's favorite time of the year can turn into a nightmare for the unrewarded host who guides the family ship through rough waters throughout the year. All that holiday shopping, cooking, and entertaining can lead to burn-out and exhaustion, indifference and apathy, with irritability and snapping at loved ones and inexplicable crying spells. If you have these symptoms, consult a professional homeopath. Sepia just may be the remedy that will give you the physical and emotional reserves to get through this time of the year without losing your cool.

Homeopathy: The Missing Link

A new documentary series, Homeopathy: The Missing Link, is scheduled to launch in January 2016. It will be a six-part series, each episode containing interviews recorded during 2015. Check out a sneak-peak here.  And while you’re there, please post a supportive comment.

Lingering Fatigue After an Acute Illness

Frequently, patients seek help for lingering fatigue that began after an illness. Typically this is secondary to influenza or mononucleosis, but can occur with strep throat, meningitis, Lyme disease, West Nile fever, malaria, and others. Prolonged fatigue can also set in after a severe mental/emotional or physical shock. These individuals generally respond more slowly over weeks or months, but they frequently need only one homeopathic remedy to feel significantly better. Consultation with a trained homeopathic professional should be considered. Remedies that might be useful and their associated causes include:

  • Argentum metallicum: when there is a breakdown in the nerves.
  • Gelsemium sempervirens: after a fright, influenza, or a strong chill.
  • Kali phosphoricum: when there has been too much mental exertion or worry, especially in love relationships.
  • Natrum sulphuricum: when weakness occurs after a head or back injury.
  • Nux vomica: when there has been abuse of stimulants and alcohol, and a loss of sleep.
  • Phosphoric acid:  when there has been a strong grief.
  • Picric acid: when exhaustion results from overwork and intense study.
  • Selenium: when there is exhaustion on the sexual sphere from overindulgence.
  • Stannum metallicum: after pneumonia or lung problems.
  • Zincum metallicum: after influenza, or a disease (especially of the skin) that has been suppressed in some way.

THE ORGANON by Samuel Hahnemann –  An Outline
Provided in tribute to Julian Winston, May 1941 – June 2005, beloved Editor-In-Chief of Homeopathy Today for 21 years.

It is often said that studying The Organon is fundamental for any successful homeopath. In this series we glean some Winston Wisdom by revisiting Julian’s outline of this masterpiece.

82-90: CASETAKING (how to elicit the information) - Part 1

  1. In trying to cure these diseases, the case is to be conducted carefully
  2. Requisites for understanding the picture of the disease: Freedom from prejudice and sound sense. The individualising examination of a case of disease (general directions)
  3. Patient talks. Physician keeps quiet. Do not interrupt. Write it all down.
  4. Start a new line for every symptom
  5. When patient finishes, ask for particulars
  6. Don't ask "yes" or "no" questions
  7. Ask about other parts of the body not mentioned
  8. The physician should then ask more special detailed questions
  9. The physician notes what he observes in the patient

Note: The above is only an outline. To comprehend The Organon in its fullness, we recommend that you read the book.
The Organon is usually studied by the intermediate to advanced student of homeopathy.

Pregnant Women Increasingly Interested in Homeopathic Remedies

A recent longitudinal study in the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology indicates that women are becoming increasingly interested in CAM therapies during pregnancy, including homeopathic remedies. Reasons for this trend included desires for holistic therapies by study participants, as well as concern about their own personal experiences during pregnancy.

Repertorizing the Case: Differentiating Remedies - An Integrated Approach
December 7, 2015, 8:00pm – 9:00pm ET

For homeopaths new and experienced, often the greatest challenge in practice is differentiating from a wide array of possible remedies for the client. With the advent of the Sensation method, Scholten’s categorization of minerals and the wide array of newly proven substances, the challenge has been amplified.

This webinar will offer some suggestions in how the classical homeopath can integrate insights coming from a variety of sources to enhance remedy choice.

Loretta Butehorn PhD, CCH, RsHom(NA), is a practicing homeopath and psychologist. She directs The Sidewalk, a donation-only clinic for marginalized people in Roxbury, MA. Dr. Butehorn is on the NCH Board of Directors, is a founding member of Teleosis Homeopathic Collaborative, and teaches at Boston College.

Test your Beginner's First-aid for Animals knowledge!

You're going home for the holidays, and the family pets are welcome. You know from previous car trips that motion sickness is a big problem for your dog. There's the drooling, panting, vomiting, and restlessness. This year, the trip will be much better for all involved if you give what remedy early in the day, and then again just before loading up the car?

(The answer is at the bottom of the newsletter.)

A special thanks to Kristy Lampe for providing the First-aid for Animals to Homeopathy Today magazine in 2001.

Your sister recently gave birth to a healthy baby girl. She has been breast-feeding, but having a difficult time. She feels that her milk supply isn’t sufficient. She is also constipated, and suffering from a headache almost constantly. She explains that the headache starts as soon as she raises her head up from lying down, and that even her eyes hurt when merely moving them. Although it is colder now, she uses the heat in the house sparingly because she detests the heat of the furnace and it seems to make her worse. What remedy do you send her?

Stories of Inspiration

After a mild stroke in 2003, I began to have seizure trouble. For the next year, doctors tried six different anticonvulsant drugs, with no improvement.  I am a veterinarian, and was strictly allopathic at the time.

I became very depressed at my condition, and side effects from the drugs made things even worse.  I couldn't work very well, and began to self-medicate in an attempt to feel normal.

Eventually, I convinced the doctors to try stopping my medication, and my symptoms improved immediately.  I sought the help of a homeopath, after beginning my own study of homeopathy, and my health steadily improved. Today I practice mostly homeopathy with my patients, am certified in veterinary homeopathy, and serve on the board of the Academy of Veterinary Homeopathy (AVH).

This medicine truly saved my life and restored my health, mentally and physically.

- Todd Cooney DVM, CVH of Kokomo, IN

We LOVE to hear how our members are using homeopathy at home and we hope you will share 'Your Homeopathy Story' with us! Everyone’s story is different and we want to know how you use homeopathy in your life! Learn how to share one of your stories with NCH.

Homeopaths Without Borders (HWB)

A HWB graduate reports the following case:

“On 24 September, a truck in Canapé-Vert lost its brakes, killing three people and injuring at least ten others. As I was nearby, I immediately diluted Arnica montana 200c in water and was able to serve several of the victims who were struck by the runaway truck. I am so grateful that HWB’s training (HWB Homeopathic Fundamentals Course) provided me with the skills to save peoples’ lives.”
