Ankle Sprain Remedies

While enjoying a perfectly wonderful child-like moment of rolling down a grassy hill with your niece, you stand up too quickly and proceed to take tumble, twisting your ankle - ouch! You remembered PRICE (Protect, Rest, Ice, Compress, and Elevate) and have been taking Arnica. They helped, but two days later it’s still swollen and painful. Now what? Consider these follow up remedies for ankle sprains:

  • Bryonia - Sprains with severe pain. The pains are stitching and are worse for cold and the slightest movement. The sprained joint is better from rest (for keeping the joint perfectly still) and from pressure (tight bandaging).
  • Ledum palustre - Sprains with bruising. The joint feels cold and looks bruised (blue-black). Although the joint is cold, it feels better for ice cold compresses—the colder the better.
  • Rhus toxicodendron - Sprains with stiffness and restlessness. The pains are aching and the joint is worse when first moving it after a rest—and then better for a while with continued movement. It's hard to get comfortable in any position so a painful restlessness ensues. A sprained wrist cannot grip anything properly or strongly. Hot compresses and baths provide relief.
  • Ruta graveolens - Constant pain and lameness. The pains are more bruised than than they are aching. Pain is worse from pressure, standing, or walking, and there's no relief from continued movement (as there is with Rhus tox). The pains are better with heat and wrapping the joint.
  • Strontium carbonicum - Repeated, chronic sprains. For weak, swollen ankles.

Balancing a Child’s Behavior

We have all read about children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or a learning disorder or behavioral problems who have been helped by homeopathy. But when you see, firsthand, someone's life and potential improve drastically, it really warms your heart and helps you remember to be grateful for the little remedy doses that keep a child off toxic drugs—and even out of mental institutions.

Though it is a very difficult journey for parents who want to find help for their "problem child," it is imperative that they educate themselves on the pros and cons of conventional as well as complementary treatment. Though many receive the ADHD diagnosis, every child is different and deserves treatment which is individualized.

Twelve-year-old Celeste's story tells of the heartache and helplessness a family feels when one they love is miserable and is making them feel miserable. Read more here.

Excerpt from Homeopathy Today May 1988 - Author Lia Bello, RN, CCH

THE ORGANON by Samuel Hahnemann –  An Outline
Provided in tribute to Julian Winston, May 1941 – June 2005, beloved Editor-In-Chief of Homeopathy Today for 21 years.

It is often said that studying The Organon is fundamental for any successful homeopath. In this series we glean some Winston Wisdom by revisiting Julian’s outline of this masterpiece.

Paragraphs 45 – 51: Lays out the philosophy of the system (continued)

  1. Two similar diseases will destroy each other in the organism.
  2. Examples of the above.
  3. It should be convincingly clear that this is how to cure according to natural law.
  4. Dissimilar diseases don't cure.
  5. Nature is poor in remedial homoeopathic diseases, so we do not notice them often.
  6. And those that can cure, bring other problems, often because the dose cannot be controlled.
  7. But the physician has many medicines available

Note: The above is only an outline. To comprehend The Organon in its fullness, we recommend that you read the book.
The Organon is usually studied by the intermediate to advanced student of homeopathy.

Test your repertory knowledge!

Oops! There was a typo in last month’s quiz answer! The answer to the question Which of the following is not a section in Kent's Repertory? is actually: b. Heart. Sorry about that! And now this month’s edition…

Which kinds of homeopathic symptoms are included in repertories?

  1. Proving and clinical symptoms
  2. Only proving symptoms
  3. Only clinical symptoms
  4. Only cured symptoms

(The answer is at the bottom of the newsletter.)

A special thanks to Karen B. Allen, CCH for providing the REPERTORY QUIZ to Homeopathy Today magazine in 2003.

The day after a hike on an overgrown trail the following symptoms begin to develop: an intensely itchy rash of vesicles with yellowish centers and red borders, worse from scratching and better from scalding hot water. Could it be poison ivy? The itching causes you to dig your nails into the skin and makes you uncharacteristically angry. An occasional curse word slips out, which is surprisingly out of character for you.

Stories of Inspiration

I was being treated successfully for two years by a homeopath, and always had taken remedies only as prescribed by him. When I had an upcoming surgical mole-removal, I asked my homeopath what to take. He said to take Arnica the day before, and then to take Staphysagria immediately afterwards. Although it was a 2-inch incision, I did not need to take any other medications for pain at all. After several hours, suddenly the incision felt like it was on fire. It was three o'clock in the morning, so I did not want to call my homeopath. I remembered from the first-aid course he taught that Cantharis is for burning, so I hurried to my stash of remedies and took it. Wonderfully, in less than five minutes, all I felt was a mild pressure. I realized then that the burning feeling was an after-effect of the doctor having cauterized the area so the bleeding would stop. WOW, such powerful and fast-acting little pills!

- Beth Duggan of East Stroudsburg, PA

We LOVE to hear how our members are using homeopathy at home and we hope you will share 'Your Homeopathy Story' with us! Everyone’s story is different and we want to know how you use homeopathy in your life! Learn how to share one of your stories with NCH.
