Significant Flaws in Recent Australian Study Discrediting Homeopathy’s Effectiveness

In early-March the Australia National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) released a study discrediting the effectiveness of homeopathy. NCH is a consumer membership organization, not a research group, so it's not our practice to comment on particular research reports. Therefore we did not issue an official response.  However we did inform interested media outlets that NCH represents a community of over 12,000 consumers who have found homeopathy significant enough in their lives to pursue more information about it.

The Homeopathic Research Institute (HRI), a UK-based homeopathic research organization, released a detailed statement in response to the report that systematically addresses its significant flaws. We recommend referring interested community members to this article for detailed information on the inadequacies of the NHMRC report, as well as to HRI’s international clinical research homeopathic research database, Core-hom, for additional research studies supporting the effectiveness of homeopathy.

FDA to Evaluate Homeopathic Product Regulatory Framework

The FDA announced last week that it will hold a public hearing to obtain information and comments from stakeholders about the current use of human drug and biological products labeled as homeopathic, as well as the Agency’s regulatory framework for such products. NCH is currently working with experts across the homeopathic community, such as manufacturing representatives, professional associations, and advocacy groups, to prepare for the hearing. NCH will also have representation at this hearing. We will provide you with additional updates about this process as information becomes available. Individual action from community members is not required at the time. Should a time come when action from individuals in the community is needed, we will communicate details about how to get involved.

Eye Spy an Eye Sty

Eye spy with my little eye an unsightly eye sty. A sty (or stye) is a tender, fluid filled bump or boil on the upper or lower lash caused by an acute infection of the eyelash follicle or secretory glands. If you’ve ever had one it is not something you will soon forget. In most cases, a sty naturally improves and disappears; however, the condition can be quite painful for some and extremely irritating at the least. Keeping a little one from rubbing it is very challenging and creates an urgency that calls for the homeopathy kit. Check out these common sty remedies.

Shoo Shingles

As you may be aware, shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is caused by the same virus that causes chicken pox. The virus, after being contracted as chicken pox, tends to stay in the body in a dormant state. Later in life the virus may erupt again appearing as vesicular skin lesions and is often associated with extreme pain. These lesions can appear anywhere on the body surface, but always follow the distribution of a nerve root - hence the lesions appear only on one side of the body in a kind of stripe (usually three to six inches in width). Conventional medical treatment consists of anti-viral agents and pain control. Homeopathic medical treatment consists of giving a similar medicine, that is, one that could cause similar symptoms in larger doses, but in small doses can help the body heal itself. As always in homeopathy, the remedy that gives the best response is the remedy that best matches both the specific disease symptoms of the patient as well as the symptoms of the patient in general (such as chilliness, thirst, mood, etc.). THE ORGANON by Samuel Hahnemann –  An Outline
Provided in tribute to Julian Winston, May 1941 – June 2005, beloved Editor-In-Chief of Homeopathy Today for 21 years.

It is often said that studying The Organon is fundamental for any successful homeopath. In this series we glean some Winston Wisdom by revisiting Julian’s outline of this masterpiece.

Paragraphs 28 – 29: How it Works (attempt) rewritten in the 6th edition

  1. Scientific explanations of how it works are of little importance, there is no value in attempting one. Nevertheless...
  2. The artificial disease of the remedy overpowers the weaker natural disease. When the force of the artificial disease is spent, the body returns to normal health. This is a most probable explanation.

Paragraphs 30-33: Lays out the philosophy of the system

  1. The human body is more disposed to let its state of health be altered by drugs than by nature.
  2. Disease agents do not affect everyone. We fall ill only when susceptible. [SUSCEPTIBILITY]
  3. Medicinal agents can affect all people.
  4. The body is, therefore, more susceptible to medicinal forces.

Note: The above is only an outline. To comprehend The Organon in its fullness, we recommend that you read the book.
The Organon is usually studied by the intermediate to advanced student of homeopathy.

Cool News about Hot Flashes

A new study shows that homoeopathy may be the most effective course of action for women suffering menopausal symptoms such as depression and hot flashes. The results of this randomized, double-dummy, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was published in the respected medical journal PLoS One. The researchers compared the effect of individualized homeopathic treatment with conventional fluoxetine (Prozac) treatment in 133 women with moderate to severe menopausal depression. The women were given six weeks of either homeopathic treatment, fluoxetine or a placebo. At the end of that period the results showed that homeopathy and fluoxetine were both more effective than placebo, but only homeopathy was more effective than placebo. In addition, only homeopathy was effective for hot flashes. The research found that that individualized homeopathic treatment was so dramatically effective in treating the symptoms of menopause that the results were considered “clinically significant.” View the abstract for this study here.

Homeopathy and Integrative Medicine: General Concepts and Practical Experiences

The Journal of Medicine and the Person (JMP) issue "Homeopathy and Integrative Medicine: General Concepts and Practical Experiences" has been published. It is a long and elaborate work from Paolo Bellavite, MD, Professor of General Pathology at the University of Verona, and Professor Balducci, Editor-in-Chief of JMP. This is big news since it is the first time that a conventional journal opens the door to the hot topic of homeopathy. In addition to the article “Experiences with an integrative approach to treating HIV/AIDS in East Africa”, co-authored by our very own NCH BOD member, Tina Quirk, the issue also includes articles on:

  • Homeopathy and integrative medicine: keeping an open mind
  • Homeopathy: from tradition to science?
  • Biology and sign theory: homeopathy emerging as a biosemiotic system
  • Qualitative evaluation of successful homeopathic treatment of individuals with chronic diseases: descriptive phenomenology of patients’ experiences
  • The concept of healing and integrative care
  • Integration of homeopathy and complementary medicine in the public health system in Italy: national regulation and regional experiences
  • Homeopathy on the crossroads of traditional and integrative medicine in the Middle-East

A special thanks to Karen B. Allen, CCH for providing the REPERTORY QUIZ to Homeopathy Today magazine in 2003.

It has been a cold winter. Your toddler has developed a harsh cough. When she coughs, you can hear the mucus in the throat and airways. It seems to fill whole of her little chest. She seems short of breath after every fit of coughing. She has also become extremely clingy to you and cries more than ever. Not only does she refuse to be picked up by anyone other than you, but she cries whenever someone else looks at her. While earlier she loved to bathe, now she cries and makes a face as if too cold. What remedy do you give her?

Stories of Inspiration

I first tried homeopathy when I was still nursing my 1 year old and was pregnant with my second child. I had mastitis (for about a week) and had been prescribed antibiotics.  After reading up on the effects of antibiotics in breast milk and on my fetus, I wasn't comfortable taking it. I found a homeopath who prescribed me Phytolacca.  Within 12 hours the mastitis had disappeared.  I continued to use it if the mastitis came back (for me, it was when I got a chill). I later learned that in Germany, they treat the majority of mastitis cases with homeopathic medicines rather than antibiotics.

American Institute of Homeopathy

The American Institute of Homeopathy worked with the Liga Medicorum Homeopathica Internationalis, commonly known as “the Liga,” as part of our international response to the Ebola epidemic. We want to thank AIH Members Dr. Andre Saine, who led the research team in the search for the genus epidemicus, and Dr. Richard Hiltner, who traveled with the international team of clinicians to Monrovia, Liberia.  A representative of the World Health Organization refused to allow the clinical team access to the Ebola Treatment Unit. Both the AIH and the Liga wrote letters of protest to the WHO.  You can read the AIH letter here. Although our team was not permitted to treat Ebola-infected patients, they did have the opportunity to treat patients hospitalized for other illnesses. The results were impressive and the Liga has been invited to establish an educational program on homeopathic medicine in Liberia. The AIH will continue to work with the Liga on international matters pertaining to homeopathy.

Since 1844, AIH has been the voice of the homeopathic medical profession.  See for further information.
